This year is the 25th anniversary of this tragic event that affected so many people in the city of Cheyenne. A remembrance of the event will take place on Thursday, August 5th at 630 PM in the Cottonwood Room of the Laramie County Library at 1600 Pioneer Ave. This is a FREE event and open to the public. Current and former community leaders and National Weather Service Personnel will be on hand to recount the event and discuss lessons learned to increase preparedness so that such a loss of life can be avoided during flooding situations in the future.
By late afternoon on August 1, 1985, a stationary thunderstorm developed over Cheyenne, Wyoming, producing record amounts of rainfall. In approximately a 3-hour time span, six plus inches of rainfall occurred. The storm produced at least one tornado, heavy rains, and hail. In some parts of town, hail piled up to depths of 4-6 feet. The severe flooding resulted in 12 deaths, 70 people were injured, and total damages exceeded $61 million.
